この地球で暮らす生物たちは、それぞれの環境に合わせたさまざまな生殖の方法をとる。　両生類であるカエルは、雌に雄が乗ることで産卵を促し（抱接）、産まれた卵に精子をかけることで受精させる。彼らの糞や尿、卵、そして精子はすべて「総排出腔」と呼ばれる器官から出てくるため、雄のカエルにペニスはないはずだ。
しかし、この写真を見てほしい。どこから見てもペニスそのものとしか思えない、不思議な器官を具えたカエルの登場だ。

写真は、オーストラリア人のフェイスブックユーザーであるキース・リーチさんによって今月4日に公開された。「What the frog（ひっくりカエルほど驚いた）」の一文とともに投稿された3枚の写真からは、カエルの股間からペニスとしか思えないピンク色の器官が飛び出ている様子がハッキリと確認できる。しかも、陰茎と亀頭までしっかり形成されているようだ。カエルが雄か雌かについての言及はないが、体との比率からかなりの巨根の持ち主であることがうかがえる。それにしても一体これは何なのか？
　画像を報じたバイラルメディア「BuzzFeed」オーストラリア版によると、この写真を見た同国の両生類専門家であるゲリー・マランテーリ氏は、このカエルの総排出腔付近の遺伝子に異常が起きた結果ではないかと推測している。このペニスは奇形によって生じた、いわば第3の脚とでもいうべきものであるとのこと。
　それにしても位置、色、形といい見事なペニスとしか例えようがないが……。いずれにしても、写真を投稿した本人しか実物を見ていないため、確かなことは誰にもわからない。まだまだ自然界は神秘に満ちている。
