1993年8月、京都大学霊長類研究所の大沢秀行助教授(当時)と、竹中脩(当時)教授のグループがカメルーンを訪問した際、飼育下にゴリラのようにゴリゴリの風体をしたチンパンジーのオスの亜種を発見した。体毛を持ち帰り検査の結果、これまでの3亜種(ベルス、トログロディテス、シュワインフルティ) とはDNAが異なる第4亜種とわかった。サイズはチンパンジーのメスくらい、体毛は茶褐色で多く、眉の上が突き出ているのが分かる、背中と肩をゴリラのように反らせて歩くという。米霊長類学者ヒルがかつて、カメルーン南東部からガボン、コンゴのザイール川までのジャングルに「Gorilla like chimpanzees」と呼ばれる「Crocombe(仮)」が生息すると主張したが、40年代以降の報告はなかった。
