1884年3月10日生まれ。御年131歳。このたびブラジルで世界最高齢の男性がいたとして話題となっている。英メディア『metro.co.uk』が伝えた。
1884年というと日本では明治17年。鹿鳴館時代がはじまり上流婦人において洋装が流行った年で、翌年には伊藤博文が初代総理大臣に任命されている。
131歳の男性ジョアン・コエーリョ・デ・ソウザ（Joao Coelho de Souza）さんはこんな時代に生まれたことになる。
ブラジル北西部に位置するアクレ州の社会保障局職員が発行したとされる出生証明書には、アクレ州から東へ2000マイル（約3200キロ）にある都市メルオカにて1884年3月10日にソウザさんは出生したと記載されている。
年金の支給の関係で役所の職員が何度かソウザさんを訪ね、131歳という書類に不備がないことや本人に間違いないことを確認し、このたびギネス世界記録に世界最高齢者として申請することを決めた。
地元では新聞社が早速取材に訪れるなど大騒ぎになっている。

ソウザさんは現在、62歳の妻や16歳の孫娘とともにエスティラオ・ド・アルカンターラ（Estirao do Alcantara）という小さな村で静かに暮らしている。6年前に脳卒中で倒れたものの、米、肉、魚中心の食事を1日3度きちんと取るのが日課だ。69歳年下の妻との間には3人の子供がおり、現在30歳の娘サーリーンさんは、ソウザさんが101歳のときにできた子だという。
サーリーンさんは現地紙のインタビューに「父ははっきりと物事を覚えている日もありますが、子供の名前さえ忘れてしまう日もあります。ゴムの原料となる樹液を採取する仕事をしていましたが、今では介護なしでは生活できません。母とは一緒になってもう40年以上になります。131歳は嘘という人もいますが、必要な書類はすべて揃っている。“間違いない”って胸を張って言うことができます」と答えている。
現在、ギネス世界記録において存命中の最高齢男性は、名古屋市在住で112歳の小出保太郎さん。ちなみに史上最も長生きをした人物は122歳で、1997年に他界したフランス人のジャンヌ・カルマンさんという女性である。
