ジェームズ・コートニーとマイケル・ミーハン（James Courtney and Michael Meehan、汽船ウォータータウン(S.S.Watertown) の乗員）は、1924年12月にニューヨーク市からパナマ運河の方へ出航し、石油タンカーの貨物タンクを洗浄していました。
不慮の事故で、2人の男性がガス煙霧にまかれて死亡しました。
当時の習慣で、船員は、12月4 日、メキシコの海岸沖の海で水葬されました。
しかしこれは、残りの乗員が、不運な船員仲間を見ることになった最後、ではありませんでした。
その翌日、夕暮れ前に、１等航海士は船の左舷側で、波の中に2人の男の顔を見ると報告しました。
彼らは10秒の間水の中にとどまり(remained)、そして姿を消しました。
その後数日間、水夫の幻のような顔は、水の中で船の後を追い(following)、乗組員他のメンバーによって明らかに目撃され(seen)ました。
ニューオリンズへの到着時、船のキャプテンキース・トレイシー(Keith Tracy) は、変な出来事(strange events) を彼の雇い主シティーズ・サービス社(Cities Service Company)に報告しました。
そして彼は、不気味な顔(eerie faces) の写真を撮影するよう提案されました。
キャプテン・トレイシーは、継続的な航海のためにカメラを購入しました。
顔が水の中に再び現れたとき、キャプテンは6枚の写真を撮り、そしてカメラとフィルムを船の金庫にしまい込みました。
フィルムがニューヨークの現像業者(写真屋、commercial developer) によって現像(processed) されたとき、5枚の(five of the exposures) 写真は海の泡だけを示しました。
しかし、第6枚目の写真は、悲しい運命の水夫の気味悪い顔を写し出し(showed) ました。

否定的側面(negative)は、バーンズ興信所(Burns Detective Agency) によって誤魔化し(fakery) がないかチェックされました。
船の仲間が変わった後は、目撃例のどんな報告もありませんでした。
