一般的にヨーロッパやユーラシア洞窟ライオンとして知られるPanthera leo spelaeaや P. spelaeaは、化石と先史時代の芸術の多くの例から知られるライオンの絶滅亜種です。
この亜種は、最大のライオンの1頭でした。成人の雄（それはSiegsdorf、ドイツの近くで1985年に見つかりました）の骨格は、およそ1.2m（4フィート）の肩高さと尾のない2.1m（7フィート）の頭-体長さを持ちました。
これは、非常に大きな現代のライオンのサイズと類似しています。
この雄のサイズは、この亜種の他の見本によって越えられました。
したがって、この猫は、現代のライオンよりおよそ8%-10%大きい場合があって、以前のドウクツライオンの亜種(Panthera leo fossilis)、または比較的巨大なアメリカのライオン（Panthera leo atrox）より小さい場合がありました。
