巨大な爬虫類の話題にしばしば触れている人々とはいえ、その姿を普段の生活の中でいきなり目の当たりにしたらどれほど仰天することか。このほどオーストラリア南東部のとある町で、一軒の民家に…。

裏庭で小屋を修理していたところ、長い舌を持つ体長1.5mほどの巨大なトカゲが家の外壁にべったりと張り付いていた…そんなショッキングなシーンを目の当たりにしたのは豪ニューサウスウェールズ州アルベリー（Albury）近郊の町、サーグーナに暮らすエリック・ホーランドさん（80）であった。
地元紙『The Border Mail』の取材に「オオトカゲはレンガの外壁をスルスルと軒下まで上ると、長い尾をビクンビクンと揺らして煙突を叩くのです。
私はもう火星人にでも遭遇したような気分でした」と語ったエリックさん。
その土地に暮らして18年になるがそんなに大きなトカゲを見たことはなく、小屋の裏側に身を隠しながらやっとのことでデジタルカメラでの撮影に成功したそうだ。

その写真と記事はオーストラリアの人々にとってもかなりの衝撃であったとみえ、瞬く間にSNSの大きな話題になってしまったという。
しかし、ニューサウスウェールズ州環境・自然文化遺産局は「そのあたりで巨大なトカゲが出現するのは珍しいことではありません。
“レースオオトカゲ（英名：Lace MonitorあるいはGoanna）”と呼ばれるものでしょう。成長すれば体長は2m以上、体重は20kgほどになります」などと説明している。
昆虫、魚類、爬虫類から鳥類、哺乳類、動物の死骸まで食性に関しては非常に旺盛で、ペットとして飼っている人もまれにいるという。
