ニュージーランド北東のほぼ中央に位置するタウポ湖は、同国最大の湖だ。1980年、オーストラリアの有名な未知動物研究家レックス・ギルロイが、この湖をゆっくり横切る未知動画「タウポ・モンスター」の目撃および撮影に成功した。
